I got in to Red Brangus in 2006 when my partners and I brought some cattle out to our hunting ranch near Rocksprings, Texas. We decided to buy the cattle because it was easier to run a few cows than it was to fill out all the paperwork for the wildlife exemption, plus, we could play cowboys. Over time, the herd grew and I began to learn about cows from one of my partners, a lifetime cattleman. The more I learned, the more interested I became. I was amazed at how the cattle thrived in country really suited for goats, as there wasn’t much grass but plenty of rocks and cedar.

In 2012, my wife, Mary, and I, along with two of our children, bought a ranch in Bastrop County, just outside of Paige, Texas. This is cattle country! I brought a few head of our ARBA Red Brangus with us, bought a bull and we started to build our herd. The calves were looking better each year, but I wanted bigger improvements and I was always worried about the fact that with ARBA cattle, I never knew exactly what percentage mix they were.

As 2015 drew to a close, I was starting to fall in love with cows and was beginning to get really serious about improving our herd. I was not going to spend a lot of money on a bull if I did not know the breed percentages. I discovered IBBA were 3/8-5/8. I bought two very good IBBA bulls and my 2017 spring calves made a large leap in quality, which led me to buy two more bulls to completely service my growing herd.

By the time 2018 rolled around, I was intensely focused on herd improvement. If a couple good bulls could make a difference, what kind of difference could great bulls make? What about starting over with great heifers and cows? I was off to the races!

While I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel, I’m determined to have the best cattle possible. To that end, in August of 2018, I started buying IBBA Red Brangus heifers, cows and bulls from breeders including Cox Excalibur, Buffaloe Cattle, McDonald Ranches, MBJ Ranch, Triple J-R Cattle, Triangle K, Vineyard Cattle and KTS. The genetics of our herd reads like a ‘Who’s-Who’ list of the Red Brangus breed. In addition to the great bloodlines, I have been able to acquire 7 good-looking heifers with outstanding EPDs. I have found and acquired a great Black Brangus bull who is a red gene carrier with outstanding multi-trait EPDs. It’s my hope to breed a show-quality Red bull in the future with multi-trait excellence.

We run approximately 100 females and the majority of the calves will go towards beef production. A select few heifers, and even fewer bulls, will be offered for sale each year.

Come by and give us a visit to check us out! I think you’ll want to come back again and again.
